<hi style=afpcap>The C-124 was a development of the C-74 Globemaster I, with a large deep fuselage with a clam-shell nose capable of accommodating the majority of weapons systems and military vehicles which were in service during the late '40s and early '50s. The first C-124 was delivered to the Air Force in May 1950 and became the primary freighter with the Military Air Transport Service. Early production C-124s were operated by Strategic Air Command for a brief period, while others were assigned to Tactical Air Command for troop carrier movements. Both of these Commands subsequently relinquished their C-124s to MATS. The protracted war in Vietnam enabled the C-124 to remain in service for longer than planned, with the final example departing from the reserves in 1974.</hi>
